This alterations and additions project to an existing Queenslander in Milton is located between Milton Road to the North and a main railway line to the South, which runs between Brisbane city and Ipswich. The existing house is raised and shifted towards Milton Road, which enables the addition of a two-story extension to its rear. This piece of building is conceived as an acoustic buffer from the surrounding environment, and to this end is arranged around a tranquil central courtyard garden.
The main living area and entrance hall surround and open onto this courtyard at ground floor level, while above, this main space is overlooked by two bedrooms and a bridge across the sitting room. The master bedroom and three further bedrooms are located on the upper level, while at the Milton road end of the lower level, a separate private dwelling has been included with its own access. The selected facade material at the railway end of the house is a double layer of translucent glass planks, which admit a diffuse light while maintaining acoustic privacy.
