This project researches the possibility of inserting small terraces of brick courtyard houses into the existing suburban fabric of the Brisbane inner-city suburb of West End. Two typologies of dwelling were investigated – single and double storey. The site area for both typologies was 25 x 10 metres. The main feature of the two storey houses is a double-height 3-dimensional perforated brick screen which acts as a translucent veil between the public and private realms. It encloses and claims the conventional “front garden” space as the main communal space of the house. The single storey house comprises a public living/dining/kitchen pavilion at the centre of the site, with two adjacent courtyards and four private sleeping / study spaces beyond.
