A faceted brick carapace shrouds the west-facing street facade of this new house in the inner north-eastern Brisbane suburb of Clayfield, filtering north-western winter light into one of the three main living areas. The brief for this family home is arranged around two primary outdoor spaces. The first is a north-east facing courtyard, and the second is a semi-covered north-south breezeway which accommodates a central covered terrace, and separates the kitchen/dining and living areas. Several of the spaces in the plan taper to facilitate improved air-flow throughout the house. The brick screen also articulates a sequence of threshold volumes between pavement and front door.
