This project was a collaboration with Brisbane Architect Michael Bailey. With our clients’ existing Queenslander, the issue of the disconnection between rear of the house and the back garden was resolved by constructing a small piece of raised landscape, around which a “staircase of rooms” was then arranged. This created a series of platforms that provide effective connectivity between interior and exterior. This variation of levels in the new extension was a counterpoint to the single level of the existing house, and provided both a varied terrain of inter-connected public spaces, as well as a sequence of thresholds to the rear garden.
